Middle School MUST-Read Summer Book List
Summer reading should feel less like an assignment and more like discovering a book you can’t put down. Over the past month, I interviewed students, parents, and teachers to build grade level Summer Must-Read Lists, and one comment stuck with me: “This series caused emergency trips to the library because we needed the next book immediately!” That is exactly the kind of reading experience we hope every student finds this summer.
This middle school grade-level list includes 21 highly recommended titles chosen because they are engaging, age-appropriate, thought-provoking, and most importantly, books that real students genuinely love reading. These stories include mystery, adventure, fantasy, suspense, humor, and powerful real-world themes designed to hook a wide variety of readers.
The books selected for the middle school lists are intended for independent readers and were chosen to encourage reading for enjoyment while also building vocabulary, background knowledge, empathy, and critical thinking. If a book feels challenging, audiobooks are an excellent option and still provide tremendous benefits for comprehension, vocabulary development, and overall reading growth. Reading together, listening to audiobooks, or discussing books with friends or family can also help make reading more meaningful and enjoyable.
