This course breaks down the 5 components of reading using a clear approach rooted in structured literacy and the Orton Gillingham methodology. This is not a typical methods class. You will gain the knowledge, tools, and resources to implement research-based reading instruction.

This course is designed for K-8th grade educators, interventionists, and parents who want to build a strong foundation in Structured Literacy to support students with all reading profiles.

Orton Gillingham is NOT a program or curriculum. Orton-Gillingham is an evidence-based, structured literacy approach designed to teach reading, writing, and spelling. It emphasizes explicit, direct instruction and follows a sequential, systematic progression of skills. This approach is multisensory, engaging students through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods to ensure deeper learning and retention. Orton-Gillingham is tailored to meet the needs of all learners, especially those with dyslexia, by offering a clear, organized framework for language instruction.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the five key components of reading—Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. For each component, you will learn:
What it is – Understand the fundamental concept and importance of each component.
Why it's important – Learn how it contributes to reading development and why it matters for all students, especially those with reading difficulties.
How to teach – Gain strategies for explicit, direct instruction tailored to meet student needs.
How to assess – Learn effective methods for measuring student progress and identifying areas of need.
How to remediate – Discover ways to address gaps in learning with targeted interventions.
This course provides you with practical tools for teaching and assessing all five components, ensuring students develop the necessary skills for fluent, accurate, and meaningful reading.

Grounded in the Science of Reading, this course bridges research and practice, equipping educators with the knowledge and tools to effectively teach reading and change students’ literacy outcomes.

This course is accredited through Adams State University after a rigorous application process. Participants can earn 1.5 graduate credit hours upon completion. $82.50 for course credits is paid directly to ASU.
